Target Region : Maskini Village, Chiradzulu District, Malawi (Country)
Project Period : 01-09-2024 ~ 31-12-2024
2. Project Title: Rehabilitating
and Completing 25 Houses of Cyclone Freddy Victims in Maskini Village In
Chiradzulu In Malawi
3. Country
Overview:
Located in Southern Africa, Malawi is landlocked,
sharing its borders with Mozambique, Zambia, and Tanzania. The country's
estimated population is 20.41 million (2022) with an annual growth rate of
2.6%. Malawi’s economy is projected to grow by 2.0% in 2024 – a contraction in
per capita terms given 2.6% population growth. Limited availability of
agricultural inputs and the impact of prolonged dry spells during the growing
season will result in reduced agricultural output. Vulnerabilities in the Malawian
economy continue to be exacerbated by weather and climate-related shocks such
as Cyclone Freddy paired with scarcity of foreign exchange that constrains the
importation of raw materials. Recurring floods and prolonged dry spells
compounded by limited availability of agricultural inputs and weak domestic and
regional market integration keep agricultural output below its potential.
4. Regional Background:
Cultural, Economic, and Demographic Aspects of the Country and Region:
The project will
be implemented in Chiradzulu district. Chiradzulu is the smallest district
amongst the 13 districts in the southern region of Malawi covering an area of
767 km2.The 2017 projected population for the district is 327,038 (NSO 2008),
with poverty levels staggering at 63.5% according the MPRSP (Review Paper). One
of the factors that could be attributed to the high poverty levels is low
economic base for most of the people in the district. Almost ninety percent
(90%) of the population for the district is composed of smallholder farmers
with approximately land holding size of 0.4 Ha/HH and that is due to high
population pressure on land. From the said landholding size, it has been
difficult for the majority to boost their household income as they may not
venture in commercial agriculture. Lomwes and Yaos are the major tribes found
in the district with Chichewa and English as languages mostly used in schools.
Christianity is the major religion followed by Islam.
② Relationship between Local Partner and the
Target Community[1]:
Centre for Child Development
and Research (CCDR), a local partner started in implementing a goats pass on
project in Maskini village in 2021. with support from Korea Hope Foundation,
CCDR distributed about 44 goats to 20 women. The goats have increased to 80 so
far. CCDR and the local community of Maskini village have known each other for
about 3 years.
5. Project Background: problem
analysis and project justification
The cataclysmic cyclone
Freddy which hit Malawi in March 2023 left over 600,000 people displaced,
following the washing away of over 140,000 homes and the damaging of over
882,000 houses. In some cases, entire villages were washed away. It led to the
loss of at least 679 lives, led to loss of at least 679 lives, caused about
2,178 injuries and led to the missing of about 537 people. These developments
happened in 15 affected district councils namely Balaka, Blantyre City, Blantyre
District, Chikwawa and Chiradzulu among many others. The government estimated
that about US$150 million was needed for recovery interventions. So far the
government only secured about $100 million. The loss and damage occurred due to
heavy rainfalls which fell continuously for two weeks in the Southern region of
Malawi. After the cyclone Freddy, the
CCDR team visited the village to check on the beneficiaries of the goats and
the goats. The village headwoman reported to CCDR team that about 29 houses
have been damaged and the victims are living in a camp. The goal of the project
is to complete construction of 25 houses in Maskini village in Chiradzulu
district for the victims of tropical Cyclone Freddy who lost their houses in
March 2023.
